Durability's assessment saves owners more than one million dollars

The reinforced concrete pool at The Palace Condominium on Brickell Avenue in Miami suffered from significant corrosion induced damage, resulting in leaks, spalls and delaminations requiring significant repairs.

The system was energized in February 2018 and is operating successfully.  Selection of cathodic protection avoided reconstruction of the pool, estimated at 1.5 million dollars.

The engineering team determined that to ensure long term durability of the structure a complete replacement of the structure or local repairs with cathodic protection would have to be considered.  Durability joined the team to perform a condition assessment and trial installation of an impressed current cathodic protection system.

Once the trial confirmed cathodic protection would protect the structure against corrosion for at least 20 years, the team proceeded with the design and installation of a conductive paint cathodic protection system manufactured by Protector, a specialist firm based in Norway.  The installation was carried out by InterBay Buiding Services of Pensacola, Florida.
